Artist Studio Tour

Information for the 2019 Tour will be posted soon! In the meantime, visit the Artist Studio Tour Facebook page!

The Artist Studio Tour is on February 16th and 17th, 2019 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. It has proven to be such a popular event that it is now an annual tradition and this year it will last two days!

This is the 7th tour and it promises to be the best one yet with many of your favorite artists returning and many new artists being introduced.

This unique self-guided tour is a yearly fundraiser for the Merida English Library and gives important exposure to local, national and international artists living and working in Merida. Many of our artists are represented in galleries and museums around the world, but the MEL Artist Studio Tour is the only time their studios are open to the public.

The Artist Studio Tour allows you to spend quality time discussing the creative process with each artist and if, the mood strikes, you can pick up a piece for your home. You’ll find sculptors, painters, printmakers, photographers, and more in this talented group.

Steve Lemire – painter, Centro

Lucinda Young – painter/printmaker

so memory stirs

                flame blue,

out of the milky sea

Lucinda Young was born in SE Asia, went to school in England, immigrated to California and now lives in Merida. Her paintings, monoprints and mixed media installations are an imaginary road map holding buried clues about identity, memory and discovery. While the work is ultimately abstract, the marks and drawings capture real stories within their excavated surface.

Shirley Hisgen –  photographer

“My love of photography began with my father who chronicled our lives in the 50s and 60s, introducing me to his beloved Leica. When I made my own transition to photography, I focused my lens on architecture and nature. Shooting photojournalist features for National Geographic led to a new interest in portraiture and culture, inspired even more by my move to Mexico.”

Huub Keevan – painter

Huub sees his studio as his own archeological dig where everything is a treasure. Born, raised and educated as a graphic designer in the Netherlands, Huub has travelled extensively, using those experiences as the inspiration for his work. After an exemplary career in Vancouver, Merida and Mexico have become his new creative ‘wunderkammer’.

Elaine Samwald – painter

Elaine Samwald is, by her own admission, a magpie—hoarding and scavenging for interesting scraps and objects that catch her eye. Instinctual and inventive with a passion for process, Elaine studied at Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver and brings her love of nature to her work.

Katrin Schikora – sculptor

Katrin Schikora was born in Germany and studied ceramics and photography in England, but it was Mexico who stole her heart. Katrin loves to design and create beautiful objects using natural and reclaimed materials. With studios and workshops in Cholul and Merida, Katrin continuously pushes the boundaries of design as art, furniture as sculpture, with nature as her inspiration.

Martine Janser – painter

At 21, Martine left France for Canada to discover the world and earn a Masters Degree in Education along the way. After many years of teaching and travelling, Martine became a student of the arts to pursue her life’s passion full time. Her colourful evocative imagery finds inspiration in Miró, Matisse and, of course, Mérida Mexico where she now lives part of the year.

Manuel Taure – printmaker

Originally from Barcelona Spain, Manuel Taure has been a designer, master printmaker and teacher in Merida for nine years. Stephen Aiken – painter

In the words of New York artist Stephen Aiken, “abstraction is my arena.” “I like to sidestep myself and let a painting take on its own hidden agenda. With this approach, I can engage with the painting’s transient nature; a partner in the process.” Photographer, curator and painter, Stephen has exhibited his work in both the US and Mexico and now divides his time between Maine and Merida.

Equipped with a lifelong passion for art and a MFA in design, Eck lives and works in Merida, creating marvelous canvases using encaustic wax. Layers are built up, carved into and scraped away, yielding abstract imagery that often raises more questions than it answers.

Emilio Said – painter, printmaker

It is through the analysis and the reflection about space, architecture and the city itself, that I build visual imagery re-signifying concepts such as: maps, living spaces, transit, the city geographic features and its context.

Emilio Suarez Trejo – painter

My work is based on the exploration of materials, the research of the urban space and the search for identity through geographical features. I aim to explore the city space through non – conventional images of the lansdcape, using photography to capture scenes of used or abandoned objects in order to create a pictorial language from the materials found insitum. Through my work and the reconstruction of landscape I create a visual narrative of those cities or places that happen to be my surroundings.

Ernesto Novelo – painter

After graduating from law school in 2004, Ernesto Novelo decided to follow his true career path and become a painter.
