Merida English Library Expansion Project

Dear Library Supporter,
I am writing to you today because we are asking for your help in reaching our Capital Campaign goal.

The Merida English Library (MEL), since it began in 1994, has grown from a small lending library to a busy community center with over 600 active members. Our current programs include a weekly lecture series, a House and Garden tour, wine tastings, story time and crafts programs for young children, weekly Conversations with Amigos, a writers group, and other social activities.

In addition, the Library is experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of young people using its facilities. Last year 500 local students from 9 schools participated in seminars and workshops at the MEL. The first Teen Night held in October 2017 drew over 40 youth. Many local families come for Saturday Storytime as well as Wednesday Babytime.

In order to better serve our members and the community, the Board of Directors has authorized a facility expansion and renovation project which will add an enclosed meeting space in the garden, a new kitchen/cafe, three new bathrooms, and expand the children’s area. Click the button below to see plans and further information.

Starting now and throughout the Spring, the Library will be sponsoring concerts, an auction, and other events to raise money for the renovations and facilities expansion. We have gotten off to a good start this past weekend, with a concert by Christopher Collins Lee and Keith Paulson-Thorp that raised 30,000 pesos, and the MEL Board of Directors has pledged its support with combined personal donations of over 100,000 pesos!

That puts us close to achieving our February fundraising goal, but we will need to raise a total of 1,000,000 pesos to complete this project, and we must have most of that money in hand to begin. So we are reaching out to you to ask for your financial support to make this dream a reality.

We are asking all members to be as generous as you can in contributing to our Capital Campaign. You will have the satisfaction of helping us to expand our activities and serve more of the Yucatecan and expatriate communities. Plans are underway to create a “Giving Tree” on the back wall of the Library garden to recognize your contribution.

Donations may be made in cash or check at the Library or by electronic transfer. See below for details. Many thanks and much appreciation to all who can invest in the future of the Merida English Library. Your donation to the Library will touch many people’s lives for the better.

Best regards,

Greg Casini, President
Merida English Library
