MEL’s iconic book mural gets a facelift

Next time you are in the Library take a moment and check out our iconic Book Mural and experience its recently refurbished vibrancy. The mural has been updated and repaired by its creator, Bruce Hanners, who continues to donate pro bono his time and all materials used in its creation.

Bruce is a graduate of Ohio State University Fine Arts program as well as Miami Dade College and the Florida International University. He is primarily a sculptor and, in addition, has produced a wide range of work in both design and scenic art. He works in restoration at the Museo Macay here in Mérida and has also worked at a glass factory and as a Fine Art instructor.

Bruce originally painted the mural in 2003. At that time he was a Mérida resident. Fortuntely for us, he has returned to Mérida many times since he moved away, and while here, he always takes some time to restore his master work. On this recent visit as well as brightening up some of the mural’s paint work and adding some commissions, Bruce had to repair the top of the mural wall, so that water would not trickle down inside it, possibly harming the mural itself.

Be part of MEL’s history

If you love the mural, be a part of it! For a mere $500 pesos, you may have something, anything, a title, a name, a bon mot, an achievement, the name of your latest tome, your favorite book of all time, or a remembrance; painted on one of the books on the wall. And you may be confident that Bruce will be by occasionally to fluff up your valuable contribution to The Book Mural. For more information or to make a donation to the mural, come see us at The Library. And don’t forget to check out the mural itself.
