New MEL Collections Committee

Collections Committee

In order to accommodate our “growing pains” (a good thing), as well as our upcoming construction and expansion, it has become necessary to better organize and adjust our library materials. A Collections Committee was formed for this task.

We’re committed to this project, as well as making MEL’s wonderful volunteers more effective by concentrating and simplifying their efforts. Our first job was revising MEL’s donation guidelines, which we’ve submitted to the Board for their approval, after which it will be available to MEL’s membership.

Now, who we are:

Evonne von Boeck, a MEL volunteer since moving here ten years ago, is a retired speech pathologist whose job took her overseas to treat dependent children in the U.S. Department of Defense’s schools. She worked closely for 21 years with their pre-school teachers to expand literacy and continues this goal at MEL. She is a front desk volunteer, has organized and cataloged MEL’s children’s collection with Polly Gropen, co-chaired the H&G tours, and is a present Board member. She will oversee the work of the Collections Committee.

Andrea Slusser, vice-president of MEL’s Board, is a retired immigration attorney and full-time Merida resident. She holds a Master’s Degree in Maya archaeology as well as an ESL certificate. She is a ResourceMate “super-user”. Andrea’s area of concentration will be the DVD section, as well as partnering with Karen in the Judd Dolle Room’s Mexican and Latin American Collection.

Janelle Masden, a lifetime avid reader, is in her third year as a MEL front desk volunteer. She brings her MBA skills to the committee, where her concentration will be coordinating with volunteers to maintain the adult fiction and non-fiction shelves, as well as the “New to the Collection” area.

Marianne Kehoe is a published author, former English teacher, and retired dentist who also wrote curriculum and led seminars on dental office organization and team-building. She has lived full-time in Merida for ten years, is a past president of Merida’s International Women’s Club, and a “reserve” front desk volunteer at MEL. Her responsibility will be oversight of the games, magazine, and puzzle collections.

Karen Noganosh, a MEL volunteer since she moved to Merida full-time two years ago, comes from northern Ontario, where she was a librarian in charge of collection development. She has also taught middle and high school English. Her Collections Committee responsibilities will center on our used book sales.
